I’m currently 39,000 feet above the ground in an airplane and well on my way to start college on the other side of the country. I was listening to my iPod earlier in the flight and the song “Boston” by: Augustana came on shuffle, and I couldn’t help but remember how fantastic that song is. So, I felt so strongly about the song that I decide to take to writing about some of my favorite songs. Between moving and various new student activities, it could be several days before I post again, so hopefully this will suffice (it’s gonna be a long post so it better hold you over). So, having said that, check out some of my favorite songs of all time!
LULLABIES – All Time Low
Since first discovering All Time Low in 2006, I’ve been in love with their music and what they stand for as a band. “Lullabies” is one of the bands earliest releases, and it’s always been my favorite song by them. I’m a big fan of sad songs, and this song definitely fits the necessary criteria for being considered a “sad song”. I’m fully aware of the fact that it’s a very personal song to the lead singer of the band, and that’s definitely a big factor in what makes it one of my favorite songs.
Favorite line(s): Scream to be heard / like you needed anymore attention / Throw the bottle, break the door and disappear.
BOSTON – AUGUSTANA
I remember when this song first came out, I was pretty young – 10 or 11 I believe, and I recall absolutely hating this song back then. But as time passed, the song grew on my and before too long, it easily became one of my favorite songs of all time. After overplaying the song years ago, I’ve finally started listening to it again and I can’t help but think of how great it is. The song is heartbreaking, yet it describes exactly how I’m feeling at this point in my life.
Favorite line(s): I think I’ll start over where no one knows my name / I’ll get out of California, I’m tired of the weather.
ADAM’S SONG – BLINK 182
Another sad song, but for me, this song is more about who it was written about, rather than it’s actual connection to the band. I love that this song was written about a fan of Blink 182; I love songs that are written about fans because it really shows how much bands love and care about their beloved followers, and it also means a lot to the fans to hear songs written for them and about them.
Favorite line(s): I never thought I’d die alone, / another six months I’ll be unknown.
ANGEL WITH A SHOTGUN – THE CAB
The Cab is another one of those bands that I’ve loved since the mid-2000’s. I first started listening to them when I was in sixth or seventh grade, and I’ve been head-over-heels in love with them ever since. When the band’s sophomore album Symphony Soldier was released in 2011, I was so excited because I love all the lyrics that the lead singer, Alexander Deleon, writes. To me, his lyrics are more like poetry, and they always convey the emotion and message he is trying to get across perfectly. “Angel With A Shotgun” perfectly portrays his beautiful, and somewhat clever, lyrics.
Favorite line(s): They say before you start a war, / you better know what you’re fighting for / Well baby you are all that I adore / If love is what you need, a soldier I will be
ALL I WANT – A DAY TO REMEMBER
There’s quite a long list of reasons as to why I love this song. One of them being that this song is what really got me into A Day To Remember, and after listening to this song, they became one of my favorite bands. But, the other main reason as to why I love this song is because of it’s message. It’s a really great anthem for all those people out there who feel alone, telling them to stay strong and that you’ve got a whole life of better times and great adventures ahead of you. This is one of those songs that got me through high school, giving me the power to pull through every time I was feeling down or alone.
Favorite line(s): If you take it from me / live your life for yourself / because when it’s all said and done / you don’t need anyone else, come on… / I’m not afraid of anything, I’ve got the whole world in front of me
LIKE WE DID (WINDOWS DOWN) – THE MAINE
I don’t have much to say about this song, because I think that it more or less speaks for itself. But I think that this song is a fantastic anthem all about the adventures of being young. This is one of those songs that for some reason, always makes me so inexplicably happy when I hear it. I won’t say more than that, but, if you have yet to find a song to blast with the windows rolled down on a nice summer’s day, than this is that song you’re looking for. It’s perfect for that, I promise.
Favorite line(s): Take me to a time when things were fine, it’s all broken now / And we always keep in mind things are fine and we’ll figure it out
SHE WILL BE LOVED – MAROON 5
Ever since I first heard this song when I was really little, I’ve always loved it. I love the subject of the song, but to me, this song is more about the musical arrangement and the way it’s sung. The way this song is arranged is so calming and once you pair that with the soothing tone and pureness that Adam Levine sings with, it creates this really pleasantly calming vibe. “She Will Be Loved” is one of those songs I’m always in the mood to listen to, but it’s one I listen to more right before I go to bed. It always calms me down and helps me to concentrate on sleeping and not the thoughts racing through my head.
Favorite line(s): It’s not always rainbows and butterflies, / it’s compromise that moves us along / My heart is full / and my doors always open, you come anytime you want
WHO I AM – NICK JONAS AND THE ADMINISTRATION
Yet another song that I don’t have a lot to say about because it also pretty much speaks for itself. I love this song because of the message it sends, telling people to not be afraid or ashamed of who they are. The message this song sends is one that isn’t always done correctly or well, but I think that this song gets the message across perfectly.
Favorite line(s): I’m losing my breath, / I’m losing my right to be wrong / I’m frightened to death, / I’m frightened that I won’t be strong
SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT – NIRVANA
My collection of favorite songs wouldn’t be complete without an angsty punk rock anthem from the 90’s – or maybe it would be, but this song is great so it deserved a spot on the list. A big reason as to why this song made it on my list is also because I love Kurt Cobain, he’s a tragic hero in my eyes, and everything about him intrigues me.
Favorite line(s): I’m worse at what I do best / and for this gift I feel blessed
DROPS OF JUPITER – TRAIN
This is a song that takes me back to when I was a kid. It takes me back to when I first heard this song when I was riding in the car with my dad and older brother when I was seven. I have yet to figure out whether I like the musical arrangement or the meaning behind the song more, but regardless of what it is, I just love this song. Despite the fact that it’s about the lead singer’s late mother, the poetic and metaphorical lyrics always seem to make me smile.
Favorite line(s): I bet she’s back in the atmosphere, I’ma pray that she might think of me as / a plain old jane, told a story ’bout a man / who was too afraid to fly so he never did land
SOMETIMES YOU CAN’T MAKE IT ON YOUR OWN – U2
To cap off my list of favorite songs is one that means a lot to me. “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own” is a song about, well, not being able to do everything by yourself. We’re only human, and we can only handle so much on our own without reaching a breaking point, and I feel that this song portrays that message spot on. The smooth and soulful tone in Bono’s voice really helps you believe that sometimes you really can’t make it on your own.
Favorite line(s): You don’t have to put up a fight / You don’t always have to be right / Let me take some of the punches for you tonight
